Weingut Knoll
Weingut Knoll is a legendary Austrian producer, and arguably the greatest, that for over three generations has been making some of Austria’s finest wines, each bearing their highly ornate and very distinctive labels which depict Saint Urban, who is considered the patron saint of winemakers and vineyards.
The 18ha estate is based in the eastern Wachau, in the town of Unterloiben, on the northern bank of the Danube. Their prestigious vineyards face south, overlooking the mighty river Danube and benefit from its moderating influences especially during the extremes of summer and winter. Warm sunny days and cooling northern night-time breezes give significant diurnal variation (amplifying varietal expression) combined with some steep stoney terraces and the Wachau’s unique soil compositions, together provide perfect microclimates for making magnificently complex and age-worthy wines. Experts in exceptional Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners that fully express their terroir, melding complexity, minerality and structure, the Knoll ethos is one of sustainability and minimal intervention to allow their vines to fully express themselves. Today it is headed up by third generation Emmerich Knoll III and his brother August.
