Carlomagno Primitivo Appassimento, Puglia 2023

£11.90

75cl ALC 14%

I’m a big fan of rich, fruity red wines and, when not drinking Malbec, I often look to the south of Italy to find one. This comes from Primitivo grapes which have been dried a little before being fermented, hence the word Appassimento in the name, giving a wine packed full of dried fruit and damson with a touch of spice. With its juicy, crowd-pleasing style, it's ideal for festive entertaining or with a plate of hard cheese. Richard Stevens, Branch Manager

Big and rich wine packed full of dried fruit flavours made from grapes which have been partially dried to increase the concentration and then a portion is aged in oak. Lush and soft finish with sweet fruit and spice flavours.

The Wine People

The Wine People was set up by two businessmen Stefano Girelli and Peter Kosten both with a background in the world of wine and over 60 years’ experience between them.

Winemakers Stefano Chioccioli and more recently Mattia Giacomelli make wines across the country for The Wine People including in Sicily where the Girelli family has two estates, Santa Tresa and Az. Agricola Cortese. There are a total of 63 hectares here which are organically cultivated with indigenous grape varietals including Grillo. Sustainability is at the heart of the group and they have stopped all chemical interventions in the vineyards replacing them with more traditional practices; the winemaking philosophy is non-interventionist and they embrace ‘modern’ techniques such as the use of terracotta vats to enhance their wines.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
