When talking about the Rhône Valley, it’s all too easy to think solely of reds. Perhaps, if you’ve tasted widely, you’ve lusted after the peachy delights of Condrieu, or those who really know their stuff may have tried a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But this is steadily changing so it’s time for us to let the cat out of the bag. White Rhônes are simply sublime!
A recent tasting of 15 Rhône whites at Tanners HQ demonstrated that the days of fat, low acid, oily wines that were used to wash down a plate of food are well behind us. The wines we tasted were full of fresh, bright acidity, citrus as well as the more common yellow stone fruits, juicy and packed with texture. Our tasting notes were full of superlatives and purchasing director, Stephen Crosland, even hit us with the word ‘sensational’! With close to 40 years of wine buying experience, he’s rarely wrong.
