Tenuta del Priore

This winery, situated in the hills inland from Pescara, was founded in 1973 by three cousins, Vincenzo and his brother Giulio with Antonio Mazzocchetti. Believing in the quality potential of the area, they gave up the building industry in Rome and swapped to supplying the city with quality wine from their 30 hectares.

The downturn of the 1980s led to problems and Giulio was bought out by his cousins and the focus changed more to bulk wines. In 2003 Fabrizio, son of Antonio, joined having learnt his trade outside the region, particularly with the white wines in Alto Adige at the famous San Michele Appiano Cantine. He re-focussed on quality and in particular the quality of the Montepulciano grape, taking over completely in 2008. He now runs the estate together with his wife Giovanna. The 40 hectares of vineyards, situated high up in the Colline Pescaresi in sight of the Adriatic, have been completely replanted with the emphasis on indigenous grapes, such as Pecorino, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, grown at altitudes over 250 metres high and with lower yields. Three ranges are produced, of which the Campotino is for fruit-driven, early drinking wines, fermented in stainless steel or concrete with no oak ageing. The vines here are younger and on clay soils. The Col del Mondo wines are selected from lower yielding, older vines on heavier calcareous-clay and morainic soils and see slightly longer ageing although again, they are designed to be ready to drink.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
