Did you somehow blink and it’s now 2025? I’m sure you’ve commented on the weather or remarked ‘it’ll soon be Easter’ or ‘roll on Summer’ but either way, the beginning of 2025 is the perfect time to refresh of your wine stocks. Amy McCudden offers some inspiration for your 2025 wine choices.
If you like…
Crisp, zesty whites
Then you should try Gouguenheim Torrontés, Uco Valley, Tupungato, Mendoza from Argentina. Fresh and vibrant, this will delight any fans of white wine. Filled with citrus notes from freshly squeezed lemon to juicy grapefruit, it’s a refreshing change to the overt green notes found in Sauvignon Blanc.
Torrontés is an amazing partner for dishes like Chicken satay or Thai Green Curry which can be notoriously difficult to pair wine with.
Or, try Soave Classico, Zeni. A fresh white with delicious aromas and flavours of green apple and white florals. A signature crowd-pleaser, this wine is a must-have bottle, especially for when last-minute guests appear.
Customer review:
“There is definitely a lovely apple quality that balances the zingy acidity. Very delicious; It was hard to put the glass down!” Tanners Customer: Louisa, L.
Juicy reds
When it comes to red wine, the choice is certainly broad. But what if you just want something juicy and red-fruited? It’s always useful to have a bottle of red ready to reach for at the end of the week or something that is a great food match from your mid-week spag bol to a rustic Sunday lunch.
A superb bottle to have primed and ready to open is Château Tour de Luchey, Bordeaux. Soft, juicy and superbly balanced – it’s a quintessential entry-level Bordeaux that won’t break the bank.
Fuller whites
White doesn’t always have to be lean, crisp and zesty. There are bottles available that have a little more body and a spectrum of different flavours. With notes of orchard pears and ripe peach, try Domaine de l'Amandine Blanc, a Viognier blend, with mouth-watering stone-fruit flavours. It’s a great match for dishes such as prawn pad-thai, coronation chicken sandwiches or roast pork with sage and apple stuffing.
Purse friendly Sparkling
With so many sparkling wines available, the broad range of prices and styles means that a bottle of bubbly doesn’t have to be exclusively for special occasions. Of course, big birthdays and parties can warrant a glass of the good stuff, but who says you can’t have sparkling more often? Pick up a bottle of La Grande Marque Saumur Brut from Loire. With gentle bubbles and notes of green apple, this fizz has a great balance of ripe orchard fruit and a touch of toast. With a very accessible price, it proves the point that sparkling wine is great for the table, not just for toasting.
It’s a top pairing for Chinese food or a beige picnic of snacks. So, if you want to make your Friday night dinner a little more interesting then pick up a bottle of this Loire fizz.
Big, bold and powerful red
If you like a red that packs a punch of flavour, body and quality then you must try Te Mata Estate Syrah, Hawke’s Bay. Hailing from the oldest winery in New Zealand, Te Mata Estate certainly knows how to make superior wines. Undeniably fragrant, with sumptuous black cherry, ripe raspberry and sprinkled with classic Syrah pepperiness, this red delivers a patchwork of sumptuous flavours. It’s a great match for a Friday steak dinner with homemade potato wedges.
Move over Whispering Angel
I can only shout so much from the rooftops that Rosé isn’t just a summer wine. But trust me, it’s a cracking drink all year round. With the delicate style wowing Tanners staff at its inaugural tasting last year (the make or break of any new listing), Folc rosé is the unmissable alternative for fans of Whispering Angel. Award-winning and environmentally friendly, Folc is not just a bottle of wine. With a commitment to supporting local grape growers, this Rosé is a go-to bottle to share with family or friends and create memories with.
Something sweet
Sweet doesn’t always have to mean a rich Port or a decadent Muscat. There is something a little different at Tanners that is not only sweet but slightly sparkling and low alcohol too. Brachetto d'Acqui, "Braida" is a top buy for Tanners customers and staff because it’s so moreish! Bursting with ripe red fruits like strawberry, raspberry and ripe cherry, this is the ultimate match for chocolate. From cake to truffles or better still, an indulgent black forest gateau, give this bottle a whirl because it will become your new favourite.
Or if you want something sweet but equally refreshing, try the El Aziz, Vendemmia Tardiva, Sicilia. Rich, but not cloying, this sweet wine is full of aromas and flavours from gooey honey to dried apricots and crushed almonds. It makes for a delicious post-meal tipple or even try a drop with a panna cotta.
So, don’t let the January blues dampen your wine choices. There is something for everyone - all year – at Tanners.
