Barbaresco, Starderi, Renato Fenocchio 2019

This wine stopped me in my tracks when I first tasted it, spellbound by aromas of violets, roses, graphite and freshly chopped herbs, there’s an air of magic surrounding it, I find. Velvety in structure, very suitable to drink by itself or with a simple plate of cheese – complexity and finesse like this does not need, nor want, the bold flavours often found in traditional fare. The vines are old, and different to others found in Barbaresco, a traditional clone of Nebbiolo once shunned due to an unfashionable light colour in the wines, but it more than makes up for this with its beguiling perfume and irrefutable elegance. Erica Littley

Very sleek and fine, this has aromas of rose petals, then strawberries and raspberries on the palate with a mouth-watering juiciness. Renato and Milva Fenocchio make a gorgeous range of wines at their small estate in Barbaresco.

Renato Fenocchio

The Fenocchio family started farming in Barbaresco in the early nineteenth century. Farming was mixed but Renato’s side of the family specialised in grape growing from 1980. He and his wife Milva now have 13Ha - all in Barbaresco - and only began making their own wine in 2000, the grapes having been sold previously to a co-operative.

The wines are amazingly good for one who has made wine for a comparatively short time, but then Renato claims to have been wine making with his father from the age of 6! They have 11 small vineyards, each at different elevations, aspects and with different soils, bringing balance and complexity. The intense fruit can be attributed to enormous amounts of work, vine by vine, by Renato, Milva and their workers. As far as winemaking goes, they say, ""our philosophy when making wine is simple: tradition. We believe the process and techniques practice by farmers for hundreds of years is the only way to obtain the true wines of the region".

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
