Col del Mondo 'Sunnae', Trebbiano Abruzzo 2023

75cl ALC 13.5%

Bearing in mind our largely temperate climate, it is perhaps my subconscious desire for sunnier climes that draws me to the Col del Monde ‘Sunnae’. Adorned with a beautiful beaming sun illustration on its label, it promises sunshine in a glass - and it delivers! Produced by Tenuta de Priore at their Col del Mondo winery, overlooking the Adriatic, this is a blend of Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino. With fruit sourced from older and lower yielding vines, the wine spends 3-4 months in stainless steel, ageing on the lees. This focus on quality is rewarded with a beautifully textured wine, brimming with white plum, flora, and hints of honey and nutty notes on the finish. A versatile, finely balanced wine, this delivers on every occasion.Graham Mason, Private & Corporate Sales Manager

This has a wonderful silky texture with full flavours of white plums with hints of honey and nuts on the finish. Complexity is achieved through low yields, the blend and lees ageing.

Tenuta del Priore

Tenuta del Priore is a leading, quality-conscious private producer in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Situated just 12 miles inland from Pescara, you can catch glimpses of the Adriatic Sea from the estate. Inland the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif dominates the horizon. Its highest peak, Corno Grande, at 2,912 metres is the highest mountain in the Apennines. Betwixt the mountain and the sea, the climate of the Colline Pescaresi (Pescara hills) is conducive to growing great quality grapes.

The estate is run by Fabrizio Mazzocchetti together with his wife Giovanna. It was founded in 1973 by his father, Giulio, and two brothers. Fabrizio refocused the estate onto quality having learnt his trade elsewhere, particularly making wines at the famous Cantina San Michele Appiano in Italy’s northerly Alto Adige region. Tenuta del Priore has 40 ha of vineyards concentrated on local indigenous grapes such as Pecorino, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, all grown at altitudes over 250 metres. A perfectly conical hill with their vines on its slopes is emblematic of the estate. Within the Tenuta del Priore stable are two ranges of wines, the lighter wines being under the Campotino label and the more serious ones under the Cold del Mondo label.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
