Fina Nero d'Avola, Sicilia 2023 (organic)

£13.50

75cl ALC 13.5%

Rich Morello cherry, herbaceous notes, soft tannins and refreshing acidity would make this a lovely addition to any Christmas dinner. The supple tannins do not overpower leaner meats like turkey and the well-balanced acidity refreshes and revives between each delicious mouthful. This wine is easy to drink and great value from one of the best Sicilian winemakers. Deanna Myers

Loads of Morello cherry fruit, smouldering herby notes and soft tannins demonstrate the great potential of Sicily's Nero d'Avola grape, fully realised here by Bruno Fina, one of the island's best winemakers.

Cantine Fina

Bruno Fina is a man with an agenda. Stocky, shaven-headed, he cuts the sort of figure that doesn’t let much get in its way. This has involved launching his own impressive range of wines and building a huge ‘baglio-cantina’ a mansion-cum-winery in an Arab-Sicilian style.

Sitting on an escarpment, this is visible from miles around and conversely his dining room has spectacular views over the sea to the island of Favignana. Bruno doesn't have much in the way of vineyards but that doesn’t matter when your hinterland is one of the largest vineyard areas in Europe. For many years Bruno was director of the viticultural research institute on Sicily so he certainly knows which growers to go to for the best grapes. In fact, Bruno advised many growers on where many of the new varieties should be planted and in the hot climate of Western Sicily, the importance of mountain vineyards really comes into its own. His winemaking skills, while they have a New World influence, were honed by working for Giacomo Tachis, the godfather of Italian winemaking consultants.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
