Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie, Les Gautronnières, Bonnet-Huteau 2023 (organic)

This is a superb example of just how good Muscadet can be. This wine is perfectly balanced, full of zesty white fruit and a minerality I love. It’s crisp, clean and dry. I’m a big Chablis lover, and this is very similar in style. Produced by the Bonnet brothers, this is part of the new wave of quality Muscadet production. Made using organic and biodynamic methods means this is just very good wine making. It’s a very precise wine, but there is plenty of weight from the 6 months spent on lees. This wine is quite versatile with regards to food matching, but the perfect match would be fish, particularly shellfish. So, if you are having oysters on Christmas day, (or a prawn cocktail as I will be) this would be just perfect! Howard Hutchins

Fantastic, vivacious Muscadet, full of zesty white fruit character, some minerality, plenty of weight from six months on lees (sur lie) and organically produced.

Press Review

"The 2021 Bonnet-Huteau ‘Les Gautronnières’ Muscadet is that vinous phenomenon: gluggably drinkable new wave Muscadet. The wines from this part of the Loire Valley were once notoriously bland and dull and this is anything but. An organic/biodynamic gem, produced by the Bonnet brothers, it’s crisp, clean and dry, with weight and body thanks to six months on the lees."

Bonnet-Huteau

Their 40 ha have been cared for in an environmentally friendly manner since 2005. They received organic status in 2009 and today are fully accredited biodynamic producers, a dedicated thing to do in the cooler, damper climate of the Muscadet region.

At the heart of the estate is a ruined 11th century manor house. In 1959 the estate gave up other forms of agriculture to concentrate on wine production. The soil types across the domaine are diverse. The Dabinières vineyard is mica- schist and gneiss; Gautronnières is gabbro and amphibolite, both igneous rocks and Goulaine is a mix of schist and gneiss. The winemaking is largely traditional with relatively low levels of sulphur used just prior to bottling but they are experimenting with skin contact and even partial malolactic fermentations to add weight. The wines are aged in stainless steel and glass-lined tanks for a minimum of six months to over 24 months for the Goulaine.

This family-owned and run property is farmed by brothers Rémi and Jean- Jacques Bonnet. Rémi joined the family business in 1982 then Jean-Jacques followed in 1988 Producers of biodynamic Muscadet, brothers Rémi and Jean-Jacques Bonnet run their family estate with great care and dedication.
