BR26021

Santenay 1er cru Les Gravières, P & L Borgeot 2021

£42.00

75cl ALC 13.5%

A more restrained nose than some, which hints at raspberry and black cherry fruit. Quite weighty on the palate showing good depth and body. There is plenty of deliciously succulent fruit here with gently silky tannins and good length.

Domaine Borgeot

Domaine Borgeot has become a great source of flavoursome burgundies, both red and white, and if they were more on the beaten track would undoubtedly have a much higher profile.

Run by two brothers, Laurent and Pascal, the cellars are in the village of Remigny, just across the winding River Dheune which divides the Côte de Beaune from the Côte Chalonnaise. Domaine Borgeot is one of only four growers in the village. The estate was founded by the brothers’ grandfather in 1919 and now stands at 20 ha, stretching from Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise up to Puligny-Montrachet. Grapes from Laurent’s wife, Sandra, who has 2.5 ha of her own vines, also go into the domaine’s wines. Production is split 60:40 in favour of white and they have a handy 3 ha holding in Santenay including premier crus, Les Gravières and Les Beauregards. The windmill which looks out over Les Gravières features on their labels. Synthetic treatments of the vines are minimised, with Laurent describing the domaine as ‘bio-raisonnée’, a sort of halfway house between conventional and organic cultivation. A tasting with Laurent is frenetic but fun, and with Julia, Pascal's daughter, quiet but informative. Either way, there is usually a steady stream of visitors, the even local gendarme might say 'hello'.

Vintage guide

A hot growing season in 2023, meant sorting was required when the grapes came in to avoid any raisined fruit, but the results are looking promising and in good quantity. The region basked under the summer sun in 2022, and thanks to cool nights the wines have avoided excess alcohol while retaining elegance, it all looks more than promising! The 2021 vintage was severely affected by frost in the spring which means yields are historically low, the wines are fresh and juicy. 2020 was one of the earliest vintages on record following a warm summer but the wines have an appealing freshness too, like a combination of the previous two vintages. There was an absence of frost in 2019 but yields were still restricted, this time by drought, the resulting wines have great richness and concentration. A very good vintage in 2018 with no frosts in the early part of the season though rain in the first half of summer caused some disease pressure. Hail affected Nuits St-Georges and the Hautes-Côtes reducing yields. The resulting wines are rich and concentrated. Quantities in 2017 will be better than 2016 with equally good results. They are more red fruited than black, showing great elegance. 2016 proved a rollercoaster of a season with everything thrown at the growers in the early season but what fruit survived through to harvest is very good. Quantities, however, are small. 2015 is a memorable vintage for red Burgundy, certainly on the rich side.
