Saumur-Champigny, Tuffe, Château du Hureau 2022 (organic)

£18.30

75cl ALC 13.5%

Philippe Vatan has applied skills learnt in his family's fruit orchards to the process of growing grapes. The wine has a red fruit character on the nose, followed by stewed plums and plenty of ripe, well-structured tannins.

Press Review

"I always keep my powder dry, waiting for unsuspecting wines to stick their hand up and demand a spot in The Finest Fifty, but I was mightily unprepared for this little cracker to capture my heart. I used to buy this wine two decades ago, and I can swear it was virtually the same price it is today! While climate change has the world’s wine trade chewing their collective nails to the quick, a fair few outposts are rubbing their hands with glee. The beautiful Cabernet Francs of the Loire used to ripen (fully) three or four years in a decade, but today they show much more reliability, and Tuffe is a class case in point. My regular readers know that I adore Beaujolais, not least because the best producers make seamless, joyous wines that put a smile on your face without troubling your bank balance. Tuffe is the same, only with a brighter and more fragrant stance. Clean, bright and pure, the violet, cherry and blackcurrant perfumes intertwine and harmonise on the palate and the finish is knicker-snappingly fresh on account of the glorious acidity here. This wine is a rare bargain for this degree of class, so do not delay in securing your stock. 18/20 (Drink now - 2028)"

Château du Hureau

Château du Hureau is a pretty little château dating from the 18th century. It is here that Philippe Vatan and daughter Agathe produce their elegant wines. The family's link to the region dates back to 1798. Philippe, his father Georges, and brother Pascal decided to work together in 1987.

Tragically Pascal was killed in a road accident the following year, so Philippe, who previously had taken care of the family's fruit orchard, took up the mantle. Philippe took his knowledge of producing fruit from the orchard to the vineyard and has strived ever since to find true ripeness in his grapes. The estate is 20 ha spread over 20 plots with 18.5 ha of Cabernet Franc and just 4 plots of Chenin Blanc. The whole estate has been farmed organically since 2009 and much work is done in the vineyards including grassing through between the vines, de-leafing and de-budding. Philippe and Agathe are helped in the winery by consultant oenologist Didier Coutenceau who is a great exponent of micro-oxygenation. The grapes are all de-stemmed and are fermented in stainless steel or large 3200L wooden foudres or vats in the traditional rock-hewn cellars. They use the Vinifair system, a sort of inflatable air bag to keep the cap submerged, which does away with the need to pump over or punch down the cap giving the wines gentle soft tannins.
