Areni

Darling of Armenia and probably very ancient in origin, Areni is a very good quality red grape. It is hardy, as many of these old varieties tend to be, yet doesn’t have the coarseness that so often comes alongside. Italian expert and grower Alberto Antonini describes it as like a cross between Sangiovese and Pinot Noir. The dry reds have a herby edge, blended with bright, cherry-ish fruit. As is common in the region you can also find semi-sweet reds, sometimes made in amphorae; both types have plenty of guts and flavour to them.
