Barbeito

Barbeito is the most recent, and one of the smallest, producer of Madeira, founded in 1946 by Mario Barbeito de Vasconcelas and has been run by the family ever since, firstly by his daughter Manuela.

Mario's grandson Ricardo Diogo de Freitas took over the winemaking in 1993 and has been dynamic and innovative ever since. He stopped exporting in bulk, introduced the first robotic lagares to the island, introduced single cask bottling and bottled the first single vineyard Tinta Negra Mole. Barbeito's style remains distinctly non-interventionist - the wines have no addition of caramel nor are they de-acidified. The philosophy is to buy top quality wines and to work closely with the farmers to achieve this.
