Boas Quintas
Boas Quintas is the brainchild of Nuno Cancela de Abreu whose family has been in agriculture for 130 years and in winemaking since 1884. Nuno qualified in oenology and spent many years consulting and managing estates in Portugal.
In 1991 he began his own project, planting new estates in the Dão region and so Boas Quintas began. Originally there were two estates in Dão, Quinta da Giesta and Quinta da Fonte do Ouro but now the estate also comprises quintas in the Alentejo and Setúbal regions. The philosophy is to produce high quality wines with their own individuality and character. Giesta comprises eight hectares at an altitude of 200 metres shielded from the Atlantic by the Buçaco and Caramulo mountains on clay based, water retaining soils. Fonte do Ouro is just 3.5 hectares and is on a granite soil with more extremes of temperature, hot in summer and cold in winter and more prone to drought. Both estates are planted with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen and Trincadeira for the reds. The Gandarada Dão comprises wines from both estates.
