Fiano di Avellino, Terre Dora, Terredora Di Paolo 2021

This grape variety normally pairs well with light dishes like a light chicken salad or delicate seafood dishes. However, I have previously paired this with a chicken roast dinner and it enhanced the flavours of the meal, its acidity cuts through the greasy elements of a roast. The smokiness, spice and apple-like freshness are perfect for Christmas! Tess Powell

From one of the best white DOCG areas in Italy and a great producer, whose vines used to supply the famous Mastroberardino label, this has wonderful natural smokiness, masses of spice, hazelnuts and appley freshness too.

Terredora

Terredora is situated near the village of Montefusco, right in the heart of Campania’s best wine growing region with the denominated areas of Taurasi, Avellino (Fiano di Avellino) and Tufo (Greco di Tufo) all close by.

It is a beautiful, mountainous area and Terredora’s substantial winery sits on a hillside looking out over the most fertile part of Campania. Terradora has climbed quickly to the pinnacle of Campania’s wine production since 1992. In fact, it has an intriguing short history, being the product of a split in the Mastroberardino family who have dominated the Campania wine scene for several generations. Walter Mastroberardino, with his children Paolo, Lucio and Daniela, went off and set up Terredora taking all the vineyards but leaving the cellars and the brand name behind. The result is that Terredora is the largest vineyard owner in Campania, with 180 hectares of vines. These are all within 15km of Montefusco, except one rented vineyard on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
