Kaapzicht 'Rooiland' Pinotage, Stellenbosch 2021 - Half Dozen

Using fully ripe grapes from low-yielding vines, Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht crafts a rich and beautifully balanced Pinotage. Brimming with ripe mulberry fruit and subtle cedarwood nuances, the ‘Rooiland’ is a step above the norm, offering a soft and approachable style with real depth. There’s also a touch of coffee on the finish, adding complexity and intrigue, while its Claret-like structure makes it a versatile choice for a range of dishes. Whether paired with grilled meats or enjoyed on its own, this is a Pinotage that truly stands out.

This is an excellent example of the often misunderstood Pinotage grape, which scores a barnstorming 4.4 on reviews platform Vivino and quite rightly so. Full of depth there’s such a pleasing structure to this wine - a triumph to be so soft, so fresh and yet so rich. It somehow manages to rival the best of old world (think Bordeaux or even Southern Rhône) whilst bringing its own flare and some lovely distinct notes like coffee.
