Chianti Classico Riserva, Riecine 2020

£36.00

75cl ALC 14%

Open nose with dried flowers, sour cherry and a touch of leather. A complex, structured wine with vivid, slightly gamey red fruit and soft enveloping tannins. Drinking well now but could age well for a few more years yet. Riecine is a top Chianti estate.

Riecine

Located in the heart of Tuscany, in the small community of Gaiole in Chianti, Riecine takes its place among the finest vineyards in all of Italy and continues to progress as a classic winery. Lana Frank took over ownership of Riecine in December 2011 from New Yorker Gary Baumann, who in turn had acquired Riecine in 1996 from its founder, John Dunkley.

Gary assisted by then wine-maker Sean O’Callaghan renovated and hugely developed Riecine until 2011. Under Lana’s stewardship, the cellar was fully renovated almost tripling its winemaking area, and 12 new non-vitrified Nomblot concrete vats were added, which is where most of Riecine’s wines now start. Alessandro Campatelli has been director and winemaker since 2015, making 100% Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico (the core of Riecine's production) and in top vintages: Chianti Classico Riserva; their 'super-Tuscan' wine, La Gioia; and most recently, after purchasing the Gittori vineyard in 2019 having rented and managed it for 25 years, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Gittori. The estate has followed organic growing principles since 2006 and spraying is kept to an absolute minimum - no herbicides or insecticides are used, and vineyard practices aim to minimise the effects of climate change while promoting native microfauna.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
